At Habitat for Humanity of San Angelo, we believe in building homes, communities, and hope - together. We operate with an open-door policy, welcoming volunteers, donors, and future homeowners from all backgrounds, faiths, and walks of life. Our only goal is to serve those in need of safe, decent, and affordable housing - without discrimination of any kind.

Our Model: Partnership and Empowerment

We don’t give away homes. We partner with hardworking individuals and families to help them build a better future. Habitat homes are constructed through community donations and volunteer labor. Qualified applicants purchase their homes at cost with a 0% interest mortgage, typically paid over 25 years. Each mortgage payment helps fund the construction of future homes - allowing every Habitat homeowner to “pay it forward” and empower the next family in line.

As part of the program, homeowners complete a required number of “sweat equity” hours by working on their own home, other Habitat builds, or in our ReStore - reinforcing pride in ownership and a deeper connection to the community.

Habitat for Humanity, San Angelo, accepts new homeowner applications each fall. We will mail out postcards to all who sign up, letting you know when the application process opens. Please fill out the form at the bottom of this page to be added to our mailing list.

Once we receive your application, we will contact those who may qualify for further instructions.

Our Commitment to Non-Proselytizing

Habitat for Humanity of San Angelo is a faith-based organization, but we do not proselytize. We do not require or expect anyone to adopt a specific faith or participate in religious activities as a condition for receiving assistance. We serve with love and respect for all people, regardless of religious beliefs.

Who Qualifies for a Habitat Home?

Prospective homeowners are evaluated on three pillars—Need, Ability to Pay, and Willingness to Partner—plus a handful of essential background requirements.

1. Need for Safe, Affordable Housing

• Current residence is overcrowded or unsafe
• Home has major structural issues (plumbing, wiring, roofing, etc.)
• Housing expenses consume more than 30% of gross income
• Applicant meets the “housing need” definition detailed on our website

2. Ability to Pay

• Steady employment—or consistent SSI/Disability income—for the last 12 consecutive months (ideally in the same job or industry)
• Household income falls within our local eligibility guidelines
• Good credit score and no bankruptcy within the past seven years
• Unable to secure traditional mortgage financing
• Future mortgage (including taxes & insurance) will stay below 30% of monthly income

3. Willingness to Partner

• Has lived in San Angelo, TX for the past 12 consecutive months
• Completes the application process accurately and on time
• Attends all required homeowner-education classes
• Contributes required sweat-equity hours alongside Habitat staff & volunteers
• Agrees to fulfill all ongoing partnership commitments

Additional Background Requirements

• Applicant must not be a registered sex offender
• Must be willing and able to complete every partnership requirement listed above and on our website
• Meeting all of these criteria is the first step toward partnering with Habitat for Humanity to build a safe, affordable place to call home.

To qualify, you must earn within 30-60% of the Median Family Income. See limits below.
